Summer Newsletter 2008

Good Day all,

Finally; Summer has arrived and we all know the country has had extremely tumultuous weather.  Here in California, our hearts and thoughts go out to all you middle America folks, what seems to be a constant bombardment with Tornadoes.  We hope everyone has escaped those devastating storms.  Hopefully summer will bring calm.

We won’t even discuss gas prices.  By now you are figuring out how to cut gas costs and planning your daily trips with care; that’s what Jim and I are doing.  Now, when I head to the store, it’s the bank, the cleaners and store.  I haven’t taken up biking yet, but I do not think I could bike to LA for an airbrush class.  Sacramento might work, but I would need 3 days up and three days back and a new Schwin 10-speed.  I could just see me now teaching in those skin tight biker outfits…stay tuned for laughs on that one and please do not think about it.  (That would be gross.)  As for a price increase for my classes, I am not planning one.  I am hoping we can offset the gas with plenty of sign ups for Club David, full classes, and selling pattern books & packets.  If we can increase those items I can absorb the gas.  So, let’s see what happens with that.  I do think $4.00 a gallon is here to stay.  It may go down a little but I suspect as China grows we will pay.

So, what is happening with David Hoff and classes?  We have plenty of events planned and hopefully you will be attending some of these great functions.

Creative Design Class

We will be having a Creative Design class at my home studio June 21, 22 & 23.  Folks arrive on the 20th.  As you know, house classes are 3-days of concentrated study on a specific subject.  This class takes in the color wheel, design functions, working with photographs and transferring the photo to a ceramic piece, balance in design and how to put together a design that works on any given piece.  We complete 7 different pieces.  Remember with Studio Classes, lodging, food and all materials are included, except you will need your own David Hoff Brushes and ware is provided at a nominal fee.  We still have room and hope you can attend.

Club David

Club David is our on-line mini-magazine with a new technique every month.  We are now going into our fourth year and it is renewal time.  Renewals are coming in fast and furious.  Renewal is $55.00 and new sign ups are $60.00.  We post a new design with technique information, patterns, color pictures and palette each month.  Our goal is to post by the first of the Month, but things can get backed up.  There have been a few months where my schedule just gets in the way and I become tardy.  I am currently trying to get a couple of months ahead of the game.  Try as I might this has been allusive.  Renewal folks will receive their new password on June 15, 2008 and with their renewal will receive a free thank you technique sent directly to them by email.

For those of you not familiar with Club David let me explain the concept behind the on-line magazine.  Since I can not travel to everyone all over the country, who has interest in my style of teaching and decorating we started this club.  It has been said by others, “most of my writings regarding step by step are fairly easy to follow and most everyone can complete the project”.  Projects are usually done with fired products, with Duncan products and using the underglaze families of color (EZ-Strokes, Cover-Coats and Concepts).  Usually the projects feature brushwork and design work.  The projects are a variety of styles and colors.  Nothing is themed, just good brushwork, with pleasing designs.

We have over three hundred people in our club and each year it grows.  There are a few members who sign up to have the packets mailed to them.  Of course this is more expensive, but some just are not computer connected.  Speaking of computers, you do need a fairy new computer to easily download all the materials in Club David.  Please know that there is additional information within the Club David site that you can certainly use.  In fact sometimes there will be short videos explaining a brushstroke used on specific projects.  Some of the older computers and those of you on Dial-up have some trouble with downloading all of the information.  We do try to help you with this but for the most part few have trouble and when some of you do usually your computer can not handle the size of our educational file.

At this time I would also like to explain a couple of things regarding the projects on Club David and any other classes or projects you take from me.

v  Once you join the club, the projects are yours to teach for profit and fun.  You may make copies of the technique and use them in the classroom.  The same holds true for any class you take from me.  Please teach them again and make a profit.  However, we ask that you not send the projects or give out the projects and password to others who request them.  These techniques are how I make income to pay my house payment and other living expenses.  I want you to share the information when teaching etc. but to willy-nilly mail them out to others is not fair.

v  The projects in Club David will not be taught for one year after their placement on the site.  So, a project posted in January 2008 will not be taught by me until 2009 January.  This protects your own classes.

v  The projects in Club David will be made up as packets and will be available for purchase at the time of their posting.  Club David projects will be sold at the standard packet rate of $10.00.  Those of you who are members are getting the packets for $4.50 or so.

Also, this year to make Club David even more exciting, we will be adding four to six quick mini projects that will take you no more than one hour to complete.  These will be glaze combinations so, look for these bonus projects.
